A scholarly and beautifully illustrated monograph representing the most up-to-date work on the orchid species of Nepal. In all, the author illustrates and describes 302 orchid species, of which 14 have never before been recorded in the country; details such as distribution, flowering period and habitat are provided for each species.

Orchid species can inhabit an incredibly diverse range of ecological regions, from tropical, through sub-tropical and temperate to alpine environments and Nepal is blessed with vast areas of all of these habitats. The remoteness of a significant part of the Nepalese territory might suggest that it is a natural refuge in which the plant can survive; however, the author cautions that even in Nepal, development and population pressure are taking an inevitable toll on this flowering plant.
