Tasmanian Plant Names Unravelled (Second Edition)

This book is an easy-to-read reference that explains the mysteries of botanical language in a non-technical way.  The name of every one of our plants tells a story: where it occurs, its habitat, what it looks like, who discovered it, what it can be used for, whether it is edible or poisonous, and many other things.  The book is lavishly illustrated, with more than 1,630 different plant species.  Apart from Tasmania, it will also be useful in southeastern mainland States which share much of the Tasmanian flora.  Covering not only over 1,900 Tasmanian natives, it includes  over 530 endemics and more than 850 introduced species that have escaped from gardens and agriculture.

Common names, including multiple names, are given for each species, together with interesting tales of their origins, past or present uses for food, medicine and even witchcraft.  All scientific names are dissected and explained, along with pronunciation and palawa kani is included with pronunciation. Biographies of famous botanists, collectors and explorers, whose names have been honoured in plant names are included.

This is a fully revised second edition. While it has the same format and general content as the first edition, this one includes much more – more species, hundreds more images, more biographies and interesting snippets,  and much more information on many species.
