The area covered is specifically lowland subtropical rainforest in north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland.   For thousands of years prior to European settlement, local aborgines lived in and used this rainforest for food (including macadamia nuts, figs, wild grapes, yams, cunjevoi roots and the hearts of Bangalow and cabbage tree palms).  Following European settlement due to clearing, all that remained were 80 mainly small patches of remnant rainforest totalling less than 750 hectares.
