In world terms, braided rivers are rare and remarkable. They occur only in New Zealand, northern India, Tibet, Siberia and Argentina. The Mackenzie region in the South Island is a veritable breeding ground for them, offering a mountainous, glaciated place where natural gravel production, river flows and gentle gradients allow them to form.
